Bing News mobile app (2013)
Problems
- V1 Bing News app for Windows Phone 8 contained bugs and user experience issues due to shortcuts and simplifications taken during rushed development
- Strategic content partners wanted app to include user "upsell" features such as content paywall login
- Brand new Windows Phone 8 OS platform did not have many news apps, and newspaper publishers did not want to invest in developing a new app on a new platform with proven user base
Process
- Utilized user-centered design process to identify and prioritize feature areas based on contextual inquiry in usability studies
- Utilized Windows Phone emulator and Fiddler to identify and investigate bugs, such as identifying issues with the JSON analytics data reported by the app
- Collaborated with Bing apps shared platform team on identifying and prioritizing feature development for headlines list and article reading experiences
- Ensure app has been verified to comply with mandatory release criteria for accessibility, internationalization, globalization
- Collaborate with newspaper publishers on ingesting newspaper content into Bing News backend service in return for building & publishing "white-label" app branded for the newspaper that utilizes same backend service.
