MSN Travel website redesign (2014)

Problems


  • MSN.com website and MSN apps for Windows aim to aggregate the best content from across the web and provide best-in-class tools for high-value scenarios across News, Weather, Sports, Finance, Travel and other popular domains.
  • Old MSN website did not utilize new content publishing platform or hotel and flight search services used by Bing Travel app for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8
  • Redesigned website needs to launch on schedule before old content contracts expire and incorporate display advertising on high traffic pages to meet budget targets

Process

  • Research capabilities and constraints of Travel backend services in use by Bing Travel Windows app, prioritize feature development to create minimum viable product, and then design a responsive user experience formatted for web
  • Collaborate with shared web platform team on co-designing and implementing shared components such as homepage stripe, article content layout, photo slideshows,
  • Coordinate across software engineering teams on migrating & formatting travel-specific content storage to new MSN Azure datacenter
  • Review common web search terms to design an information architecture optimized for user discovery of content and SEO
  • Coordinate between display advertising, business development, and software engineering  teams on minimal 

My role

  • Planned, designed, & released hotel search, photos, reviews, and booking experience offered to 100m WW monthly users of MSN website. Accomplishments include creating low-fi front-end sketches with responsive web layouts for hotel search & booking pages, writing functional specification detailing states and error handling, and coordinating backend service changes for performance and compliance
  • Led team of 3-5 front-end developers, 1/2 UX designer, 2 QA, partnered with half dozen internal teams
  • Led advertising and sponsorship project which resulted in implementing 40+ display ads across Travel pages and custom sponsorships that generated $200k at WW launch. Accomplishments include creating display advertising and custom sponsorship branding strategy for entire Travel domain while coordinating with visual design and software engineering teams, and edited website configuration XML.
  • Coordinated compliance with all partner attribution and globalization release checklist. Accomplishments include reviewing contracts and verifying compliance with required partner attribution text, hyperlinks, and logos for various partners such as TripAdvisor, Frommers, Fodors, Lonely Planet.
  • Led project to migrate travel-specific content to Azure datacenter. Accomplishments include coordinating with Travel backend services and shared web platform teams on integration with shared components.
